ISO 27701 vs GDPR: How the Standard Maps to the Regulation

ISO 27701 is a certifiable PIMS standard; GDPR is EU law. How they reinforce each other and where they diverge.

Published: September 2026 Compliance · Privacy 8–12 min read

GDPR is binding EU/EEA regulation. ISO/IEC 27701 is a voluntary (but widely buyer-required) management-system standard. Certification does not equal “GDPR certified,” but a mature PIMS is strong accountability evidence under Articles 5(2) and 32.

Different instruments: Supervisory authorities enforce GDPR. Accredited certification bodies certify ISO 27701. Use the standard to organise evidence; do not treat the certificate as a legal safe harbour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ISO 27701 certify GDPR compliance?

No. It certifies a PIMS against the standard. GDPR compliance remains a legal determination.

Should we do GDPR readiness or ISO 27701 first?

If buyers demand a certificate, start PIMS scoping early. If SA exposure or EU customers dominate, prioritise legal accountability artefacts first — then align the SoA.

Is UK GDPR covered?

UK GDPR is a separate regime. The same PIMS can support both if scoped and mapped carefully.
