Cyber Resilience vs Business Continuity: Where SIEM, SOAR and Backups Meet ISO 22301

How cyber resilience (detect, respond, recover) intersects with ISO 22301 business continuity — SIEM, SOAR, backups, and BCMS plans working as one system.

Published: September 2026 Compliance · ISO 22301 8–12 min read

Business continuity keeps critical activities running through disruption. Cyber resilience emphasises anticipating, withstanding, recovering from, and adapting to cyber adversity. Under ISO 22301 they converge when the disruptor is malware, ransomware, insider abuse, or cloud outage with a security root cause.

Integration point: Detection and containment (SIEM/SOAR) shorten disruption; BCP/DR define how the business continues while IT recovers. Neither replaces the other.

Side-by-Side

Where SIEM and SOAR Fit

Backups Are Necessary, Not Sufficient

Immutable / offline backups support RPO goals, but restore procedures, malware-free rebuild, and business workarounds belong in DR and BCP — exercised under clause 8.5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cyber resilience a separate ISO standard?

Cyber resilience is a capability concept. ISO 22301 certifies the BCMS; ISO 27001 certifies the ISMS. Use both where security and continuity obligations overlap.

Does SIEM satisfy ISO 22301 alone?

No. SIEM supports detection and evidence. You still need BIA, plans, exercises, and leadership of the BCMS.

What about ISO 27001 A.5.29 / A.5.30?

Those Annex A controls cover information security during disruption and ICT readiness for business continuity — natural bridges to ISO 22301.
