CMMC Assessment Process: Self, C3PAO, and DIBCAC

How CMMC assessments work across Level 1 self-assessment, Level 2 self or C3PAO, and Level 3 DCMA DIBCAC — evidence, scoring, and affirmation cadence.

Published: September 2026 Compliance · CMMC 8–12 min read

CMMC assessment is not one procedure. Level 1 is self-assessment against FAR basic safeguarding. Level 2 may be self or C3PAO depending on designation. Level 3 is government-led by DCMA DIBCAC after a Level 2 C3PAO prerequisite. This page walks the process without inventing extra numeric gates.

Phase II suspension: As of September 2026, DoW suspended Phase II; during suspension only Level 1 (Self) or Level 2 (Self) may be newly designated. C3PAO/DIBCAC paths remain in the planned rule architecture and may return after reform.

15 FAR 52.204-21
Affirmation discipline; no POA&M for L1
2

110 NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2
Assessment every 3 years; annual affirmation; SPRS max 110
3
DCMA DIBCAC
