PCI P2PE and Tokenization: How They Cut Your Scope

How validated P2PE and tokenisation shrink PCI DSS scope — and what remains in scope anyway.

Published: September 2026 Compliance · PCI DSS 8–12 min read

Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) and tokenisation are the main architectural levers to shrink CDE size. They work only when solutions are correctly listed, deployed, and operated.

Scope reduction is earned with diagrams and evidence — not marketing claims.

Validation: Use PCI SSC listed P2PE solutions and document merchant responsibilities in the P2PE instruction manual.

P2PE

Encrypts CHD at the swipe/dip/tap until decryption in a secure environment. Can enable SAQ P2PE when eligibility is met.

Tokenisation

Replaces PAN with tokens in merchant systems. Vault and any system that can reverse tokens stay sensitive.

What usually remains

Admin access paths, some reporting extracts, and any channel that still touches raw PAN (MOTO, exceptions).
