CIS Benchmarks for Network Devices and Firewalls: Vendor-by-Vendor Guide

Vendor-by-vendor map of CIS network and firewall benchmarks (Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, and more) with official CIS download links.

Published: September 2026 Compliance · CIS 8–12 min read

Network devices and firewalls sit on the critical path for every packet that enters or leaves your environment. CIS publishes separate Benchmark PDFs for major routing, switching, and firewall platforms—so “we hardened the network” only means something when you name the vendor product line and the published Benchmark version you assessed against.

This guide is a descriptive vendor map: which official CIS Benchmark families exist, what themes they typically cover, and how to use them without guessing control counts. Always confirm the current Excel/PDF on the linked CIS pages before you score devices or claim conformance.

Source of truth: Recommendation IDs, Level 1 vs Level 2 profiles, and scoring rules live only in the current CIS Benchmark PDF/workbook for that product. Secondary articles (including this one) summarise themes—they do not replace the official document.

How to Use This Vendor Map

Pick the Benchmark that matches the running OS or firewall major version, record the Benchmark version string in your evidence pack, and assess against that revision. Do not mix IOS XE recommendations into NX-OS devices, or Palo Alto Firewall 10 controls into Firewall 11 images, without checking the PDF cover page.

Cisco

CIS maintains a broad Cisco family on the CIS Cisco Benchmarks page. Recent listings typically include Cisco IOS / IOS XE / IOS XR lines, NX-OS, ASA firewall content, Firepower Threat Defense, and related firewall titles—exact titles and version numbers change; verify on CIS before citing.

Common themes across Cisco network Benchmarks: secure management access, AAA, logging and timestamps, control-plane protection, routing protocol authentication where applicable, and disabling unused services. Pair with CyberSilo deep-dives such as Cisco IOS, NX-OS, and Firepower FTD.

Palo Alto Networks

Official listings live on CIS Palo Alto Networks Benchmarks (for example Palo Alto Firewall 10 and Firewall 11 lines—confirm current minor versions on CIS). Themes usually include management-plane hardening, admin authentication, logging and WildFire-related posture, security-profile attachment discipline, decryption and HA considerations where published.

See also Palo Alto PAN-OS firewall hardening.

Fortinet

Use CIS Fortinet Benchmarks for FortiGate major lines (listings have included FortiGate 7.0.x and 7.4.x families—confirm current). Expect management access, admin profiles, logging, IPS/AV profile hygiene, and interface/service lockdown themes in the PDF.

Juniper

CIS Juniper Benchmarks cover Juniper OS family content (confirm the current Juniper OS Benchmark title and version on CIS). Themes typically address management plane, authentication, logging, and routing/firewall feature lockdown appropriate to Junos.

Other Network Platforms CIS Publishes

Depending on your estate, also check CIS pages for F5, Arista EOS, Extreme Networks, and related titles listed under Network Devices on learn.cisecurity.org/benchmarks. Site guides such as Arista EOS and Extreme Networks help operationalise those PDFs—they summarise themes rather than guessing recommendation counts.

Programme Pattern for Mixed Vendor Estates

  1. Inventory device role, OS family, and major version.
  2. Bind each inventory row to one CIS Benchmark PDF version string.
  3. Assess management-plane controls first (they fail audits even when data-plane policy looks strong).
  4. Track drift after every commit or image upgrade.
  5. Keep exceptions time-bounded and reviewed.

For multi-platform scoring and evidence, use the CyberSilo CIS Benchmarking Tool alongside CSA artefact organisation and ThreatHawk logging proof where SIEM evidence is required.

How CyberSilo Helps

Assess Network CIS Posture With Evidence

Map vendor Benchmarks to live devices with the CIS Benchmarking Tool, then keep artefacts organised in CSA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I download the official network or firewall Benchmark?

From the CIS product page for that vendor (Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, Juniper, Check Point, pfSense, and others). PDFs for non-commercial use are listed on cisecurity.org benchmark pages after registration where required.

Can I reuse one Benchmark across all firewall brands?

No. CIS publishes vendor- and often major-version-specific Benchmarks. Map each device class to its own PDF and version string in your evidence pack.

Should we publish one control count for the whole network estate?

No. Control counts and IDs change per Benchmark revision. Cite the PDF version and recommendation IDs you actually assessed.

How does CyberSilo help with network CIS work?

The CIS Benchmarking Tool supports assessment and evidence workflows across platforms; CSA organises artefacts; ThreatHawk supports detection and logging proof. Contact CyberSilo for scoped deployment—list prices are quote-based, not published as a fake table here.
