CIS Benchmark for Amazon EKS: Managed Kubernetes Hardening

Apply the official CIS Amazon EKS Benchmark to your managed Kubernetes posture — then score worker, policy, and managed-service gaps with CyberSilo’s CIS Benchmarking Tool.

Amazon EKS removes day-to-day control-plane administration, but customers still own worker hardening, Kubernetes policies, and AWS-managed service configuration. The Center for Internet Security (CIS) publishes a dedicated Amazon EKS Benchmark so platform and security teams can baseline those controllable surfaces against community consensus.

Manual kube-bench runs and spreadsheet evidence do not keep up with cluster sprawl. CyberSilo’s CIS Benchmarking Tool helps you assess EKS posture against CIS Benchmark expectations, surface gaps, detect drift, and keep remediation evidence ready for auditors.

What the official CIS Benchmark covers

The CIS Amazon EKS Benchmark is scoped to controls an EKS customer can change (managed control-plane component hardening is largely out of scope). Published sections include:

The benchmark is written for EC2-backed managed and self-managed nodes. It is not scoped the same way for EKS on Fargate node management. OS hardening of worker AMIs may require a separate CIS OS benchmark (for example Amazon Linux).

Authoritative source: Exact recommendation titles, assessment methods, and intended values live only in the current CIS PDF for your EKS edition. Official listing: CIS Kubernetes Benchmarks (Amazon EKS editions).

Key hardening areas

Mapped to real CIS Amazon EKS sections, without listing individual recommendation IDs:

Control-plane logging & visibility

Ensure EKS control-plane logging themes from the Control Plane Configuration section are enabled and retained for review.

Worker node & kubelet posture

Secure kubeconfig and kubelet files plus kubelet runtime expectations on EC2-backed nodes.

Kubernetes policies

Least-privilege RBAC, pod security expectations, network policies, and secrets handling.

Identity, KMS & registry

IAM mappings, secret encryption with KMS, and trusted or scanned image registries.

Cluster networking & API access

Private endpoints, restricted API access, and related managed networking controls.

Why manual CIS hardening is hard at scale

How CyberSilo’s CIS Benchmarking Tool helps

CyberSilo’s CIS Benchmarking Tool is built to turn “we have a PDF” into continuous configuration assessment:

Turn the official CIS EKS baseline into scored posture, drift alerts, and remediation tracking.

FAQ

Is there an official CIS Benchmark for Amazon EKS?

Yes. CIS publishes a dedicated Amazon EKS Benchmark that is distinct from the generic CIS Kubernetes Benchmark. Use the edition that matches your cluster model.

Why is Control Plane Components informational?

Managed EKS control-plane components are not customer-configurable the same way as self-managed Kubernetes, so that section is informational rather than a full actionable checklist.

Does the benchmark apply to EKS on Fargate?

Node-focused sections generally do not apply the same way. Follow the scope notes in the current CIS PDF for your deployment model.

How does CyberSilo relate to the official CIS PDF?

The official CIS Benchmark remains the authoritative recommendation source. CyberSilo automates assessment, scoring, drift detection, and remediation tracking so teams can operationalise that baseline across EKS estates.

Ready to baseline Amazon EKS against CIS?

Lock in the official CIS Amazon EKS Benchmark as your secure-configuration reference, then keep clusters assessable and audit-ready with continuous scoring instead of one-off kube-bench checklists.
